Secondary / Post 16 (Ward – Bethlem Adolescent Unit)

Who do we work with?

We work with up to 10 pupils of all abilities. The age range is from 12 and upwards.

Where do you learn?

The school is close to the Bethlem Adolescent Unit, the adolescent ward. It takes two minutes to walk to school! We have a small number of large colourful classrooms. There are two classes, each with a teacher and teaching assistant.

Sometimes, when young people are too unwell to come to us, staff will teach them for short periods on the ward.

When do you learn?

The school day is  10.00 a.m. – 4.15 p.m.

What is on the timetable?

We teach the core subjects of the national curriculum: Maths, English, Science and Personal, Social and Health Education. We also offer subjects such as: Music, Information Technology, Physical Education, History, Geography, Art and Religious Education. There are practical activities such as swimming, pottery and drama. The grounds are regularly used for walks and science work.

Sometimes we have visitors who provide workshops in subjects such at DT, history and art. We also have times when we enjoy caring for the school pets.

What resources do we have?

We are set in a very pleasant environment with a football pitch and surrounding woodland. We add to and update our range of resources which include:

  • Attractive and well-resourced rooms
  • Extensive information and communication technology, including interactive whiteboards in every classroom
  • A range of books and CD Roms for all ages
  • Resources for learners with special educational needs
  • A minibus for outings
  • A swimming pool on site
  • A large and small gym for PE
  • Pets to care for and stroke!

How do we monitor our learners` progress?

You will have an individual education plan which includes key targets for you to work on.These are usually a mixture of targets for learning and for helping you to feel good about yourself and getting on with other people.

With permission from you or your parents, we keep in close contact with your home schools and let them know how you are getting on. Before you leave, we arrange visits back to your school and think about what might help you settle back again.
